MIXED MEDIA GROUP JANUARY PROGRAM
JAPENESE RICE BAG Lorraine Hollingsworth
PRE-MEETING PREPARATION and SUPPLIES NEEDED
In order to get right into the construction of the Japenese Rice Bag, it will be helpful for participants to do a small amount of preparation before the meeting. I’m also including the short list of supplies needed.
SUPPLIES:
Fabric for the outside of the bag - enough for 5 5” squares.
Fabric for the lining of the bag- enough for 5 5” squares.
Fabric for the loops at the top of the bag - this can be the same fabric used for the outside, the lining, or something that compliments your chosen fabric.
You’ll also need two lengths of ribbon or string or something similar for the ties-I usually don’t decide on this until I’ve constructed the bag so I can see how much I need.
Sewing thread, sewing needle, straight pins, scissors
Something to stablize the outside squares of fabric- this can be quilt batting or interfacing (fusible interfacing works well). If you want to fuse the quilt batting, then you’ll need fusible webbing, such as Misty Fuse, Heat & Bond or a similar product. You do not need to fuse the batting-it can be sewn on.
PRE-MEETING PREPARATION
Cut 5 5” squares from the outside fabric
Cut 5 5” squares from the lining fabric
For the loops at the top of the bag- cut eight pieces measuirng 3” x 2”.
If using batting to stablize your outer fabric, cut 5 4 1/2” squares of batting and, using one of the following methods, attach one piece of batting to the wrong side of each 5” square of your outside fabric. The batting should be centered, leaving a 1/4” around the edge of the square that is not covered-this will be your seam allowance (its OK if your batting overlaps the seam allowance a little bit).
You can sew the batting onto the squares either by hand or by sewing machine. If you do it by machine, your stitches will probably show on the outside of the bag (just something to keep in mind). If sewing by hand, use a blind basting stitch, which is a very small stitch on the right side of the fabric and a longer stitch on the wrong side. For either method, stitch close to the edge of the batting.
If you are using fusible web to attach the batting, follow the directions for the type that you are using
You can also use interfacing to stabilize your outer fabric- iron on works great but you can also sew it in. Cut the interfacing to slightly less than 5” and attach to the wrong side of each 5” square of our outer fabric.
If you want to add embroidery (hand or machine) or other decorative elements to your bag, that should be done before the meeting
Now you’re all ready to construct your bag at the meeting!
